A matter of Education

Education for the Citizenship started to be taught at the beginning of the Academic Course at the Secondary Schools and it is involving some controversies and disagreements for Parents’ Association in the Valencian Community. More than one thousand mothers and fathers of 30 Secondary Schools presented yesterday an appeal against the law that regulates the teaching of Education for the Citizenship in English. They are convinced that this subject should be taught in Spanish or Valencian language.

However, the Minister of Education, Mercedes Cabrera, has confirmed that the teaching of Education for the Citizenship in English is “an option entirely lawful” according to the Organic Law of Education.

Actually, Parents’ Association are not the only ones in showing complaints about the topic, other trade unions such as UGT (General Union of Workers) have supported the same point of view.

As a final conclusion, the idea of teaching a subject in English could be a wise decision, as long as the real knowledge of the students in this particular language is being taken into account.
