The hardest regatta

Yesterday morning the Volvo Ocean’s Race set sail bound for Ciudad del Cabo (South Africa), in a competition known as the ‘hardest regatta’. Eight teams from six different countries will compete for the glory throughout ten stages around the world in this sailing challenge.

Political deals aside, this event, with Alicante as the organizer city and the starting point of the regatta, has supposed remarkable economic benefits for the city. About a million people have visited the installations of ‘the Village’, a recreational area in the port especially built for the occasion, since the last 19th of September. The favourite attractions of the area have been the high seas simulator, the windy tunnel or the boat ‘Nao Victoria’. There have also been performances of internationally known artists such as Bryan Adams. Finally, the event has also increased the city’s hotel occupancy and provided general gains to the tourism sector in general.
